Xi "Takes Trumps Call"

Chinese President Xi Jinping "took a phone call" from U.S. President Donald Trump June 5, reaffirming commitments made during last month’s U.S.-China economic and trade negotiations in Geneva.

The conversation, the first between the two leaders since Trump returned to the White House, focused primarily on implementing the trade agreement reached during the Geneva talks.

According to a readout from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi urged both sides to “recalibrate the direction of the giant ship of China-U.S. relations” and avoid “disturbances and disruptions.”

He welcomed recent progress and emphasized that China is “earnestly executing the agreement.” Xi also called for the U.S. to remove “negative measures taken against China” and expressed concern over U.S. handling of the Taiwan issue, warning against provocations by “fringe separatists.”

Trump, in turn, praised the bilateral relationship, stating that “the U.S. wants the Chinese economy to do very well” and reaffirmed U.S. commitment to the One-China policy. He described the Geneva deal as “very successful” and said the U.S. “will work with China to execute the deal.” Trump reportedly expressed support for Chinese students studying in the U.S.

"Rare Earth products"

In a social media post following the call, President Trump confirmed that trade was the exclusive focus of the discussion. “There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products,” he wrote.  On Friday Reuters reported that China granted temporary export licenses to rare-earth suppliers of the top three U.S. automakers.

The President added that the next round of meetings would involve Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. A date and location are to be announced.

President Xi extended an invitation for Trump and the First Lady to visit China, which Trump “heartily appreciated.” Both leaders agreed to advance the Geneva commitments and schedule another high-level meeting in the near future.
