EXIM Angola Project Approved

The US Export-Import Bank announced yesterday approval of a $1.6 billion direct loan to support the construction of Omatapalo, Inc an Angloan construction firm will lead the construction of 65 solar mini grids with energy storage facilities, and the expansion of existing electrical grid distribution networks to power water collection, treatment and purification systems in four southern provinces in Angola.

The project will increase access to electricity and potable drinking water in several provinces in Angola that previously had little access and will promote improved health, education and social well- being, ExIm said.

The transaction, involving  Duth bank ING Capital, Miami-based consultant Sun Africa and Omatapalo is estimated to support 3,100 US jobs.

Items being exported include solar panels, connectors, switches, sensors and other equipment and design and engineering services..

The selection of the Omatapalo for the solar contract was reportedly the subject of debate within Exim and the Department of Commerce, in part for its political exposure.

Exim's other multi-billion dollar project in Africa, $4.7 billion of a $15 billion LNG export terminal in North East Mozambique, has been suspended since 2021 when an islamic insurgency compelled French oil firm Total to declare force majeure.
