China Goes After Turkiye on Autos

Posted

China invoked dispute settlement proceedings against Türkiye yesterday at the World Trade Organization over Ankara’s decision to impose additional tariffs on imports of vehicles and certain other passenger vehicles originating from China.

Beijing lodged an Article 4 complaint under the WTO’s dispute settlement understanding with Türkiye challenging the “additional tariffs of 40% on imports of electric vehicles and certain other passenger vehicles originating in China, and set import permit restrictions.”

“The discriminatory measure taken by Türkiye is against WTO rules, and is protectionist in nature,” according to a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Commerce.

China urged “Türkiye to follow WTO rules and immediately correct its measures. China will defend the legitimate interests of its domestic industry through all means available.”

As a first step, Türkiye has to enter into dispute settlement consultations with China within
30 days to amicably resolve the concerns raised in the complaint. If the two sides are unable to settle for an amicable agreement, China can call for the establishment of a dispute settlement panel, as per the DSU provisions.
