UFLPA - Secondary Sanctions for Uyghur Region Urged

Bill to include foreign companies that do business with sanctioned entities

Posted

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) reintroduced the Sanctioning Supporters of Slave Labor Act to impose secondary sanctions on those that conduct business with, or provide support for, foreign entities who have been sanctioned for their links to Uyghur human rights abuses.  Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) introduced companion legislation in the House.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) who co-sponsored the bill in the last congress was not mentioned in Sen. Rubio's announcement, nor did the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee mention the legislation in his own press activity, which may indicate the issue has dim prospects for passage.

Currently, U.S. law authorizes mandatory sanctions on foreign individuals and businesses involved in egregious human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including those connected to the use of Uyghur slave labor.

The bill would impose secondary sanctions on those that do business with and provide support for foreign entities who have been sanctioned for their Uyghur human rights abuse.
