While Hanoi's red carpet treatement for longtime ally Valdimir Putin spurs consternation in Washington, economic statecraft with the country's largest trading partner continues apace.

Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez met with counterparts at the first-ever 2024 U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) Economic Dialogue in Washington Tuesday

US and Vietnamese officials affirmed the objectives of the CSP Joint Statement, including economic security, semiconductors, investment climate, digital economy, cyberspace, energy, and critical minerals.

Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment Jose Fernandez participated in the meeting along with Vietnam Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung.

The two officials “discussed expanded cooperation on supply chain resilience in the semiconductor industry, support for Vietnam’s high-tech workforce, advancing the renewable energy transition and implementing climate mitigation efforts, cooperation on critical minerals, managing security risks in trade and international finance, strengthening cybersecurity and critical information and communication infrastructure, and working together to ensure that Vietnam’s legal-regulatory environment will attract high-quality investment and drive sustainable and inclusive economic growth,” according to a joint statement.

Both sides agreed to meet again next spring to review the progress made under the dialogue and to capitalize on the momentum of bilateral economic cooperation.
