Walz Toes Democratic Line on Trade

Posted

Kamala Harris’ pick of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate gives her a partner with similar views on trade – views that have been held by a majority of Congressional Democrats.

As a member of Congress, Gov. Walz voted with his party against free trade agreements with Peru, Panama and Colombia.

Along with a number of Democrats, he did support a trade deal with South Korea after the inclusion of labor provision.

He was not a supporter of the TransPacific Partnership negotiated by the Obama Administration. That deal again lacked backing by most House Democrats and US participation ultimately was killed by former President Trump.

As governor, however, Mr. Walz – like his counterparts in every states – has been focused on promoting US exports, particularly agricultural products.
